What to Wear for Your Family Photos

Family photos are a great way to freeze time for just a moment so you can have some beautiful pictures to go along with the daily memories and milestones. Even though there are a lot of moving parts in family sessions, choosing what everyone should wear doesn’t have to be complicated. Whenever clients ask me what they should wear for their family photos, these are the tried and true tips I always share with them.

BE COMFORTABLE

This is something that I elaborate on in my post about what to wear for your engagement photos. The main takeaway, which applies to any kind of photo session, is to be comfortable in what you’re wearing! Choose an outfit that you feel good in and that sense of confidence will come through in the photos. When dealing with children, we all know that if something is itchy or uncomfortable, little ones aren’t going to be standing still and smiling for long. Comfort is key!

NO LOGOS

It may not be something that you notice at first, but logos can be very distracting in your family photos. Try to go for solid colors or patterns instead of shirts that have writing or pictures on them.

COLORS THAT COMPLEMENT EACH OTHER

When you have several people in a picture, it’s important to keep in mind how everyone’s outfits are going to look together. I find that photos turn out the best when families are wearing colors that complement each other but aren’t overly coordinated. Want to incorporate patterns or bright colors? Great idea! Keep it to one or two people (depending on the size of the group) or go with fun accessories while wearing neutral colors.

Does this post have you thinking it’s finally time to get some updated family photos? Fall is the perfect season for it. As a photographer, I love shooting at this time of year because we can get gorgeous outdoor shots without sweating in the heat.

This is the season for fall family photos. How do you dream of being photographed?

Travel Snapshot: Diving in Utila, Honduras

Last year I took a trip of a lifetime and spent three months backpacking through Central America. It was such an adventure! My first stop was on the island of Utila, Honduras, where I earned my open water scuba diving certification. Sadly I don't have an underwater camera so there aren't any pictures from my dives, but my adventures above water were almost as fun. Mornings were spent exploring with camera in hand and my afternoons were filled with all the writing, reading, snorkeling, and soaking up the island vibes that I could fit in!

For the next couple of months, I'll be sharing a blog series called Travel Snapshot based on my time in Central America. This part of the world holds such a sweet place in my heart so I'd love to share some photos from my travels there. First up is a collection of snapshots from the month I spent diving in Utila.
